About the Venue
Imagine Bob Dylan playing in your lounge room. Done that? How much would you be prepared to pay to make that happen?
I won't tell you how much I paid to see Bob Dylan when he came out recently. Needless to say, it wasn't a small amount. And what did I get for my dollars? I got to sit way up the back of the entertainment centre and see something very small that looked like Bob Dylan and occasionally sounded like him too. Friends who somehow managed to get better seats than I did, assured me afterwards that it was actually Bob Dylan who was playing.
I'm happy to say that The Orphanage sessions are everything that the Bob Dylan concert wasn't. Imagine again Bob Dylan playing in your lounge room and you'll be seeing the Mars Hill Café.
The Room
The Orphanage Sessions take place upstairs at the Mars Hill Café. At one end of the room is the stage; it's one foot high and big enough for a small band to play comfortably and a large band to play slightly uncomfortably. Directly in front of the stage is some old lounges and coffee tables. Towards the back of the room are rustic looking chairs and tables. On the walls is art from local artists and the mix desk has been installed inside the cabinet of an old organ.
Arrive nice and early and you can get your pick of the lounges.
Food and coffee
If coffee is your poison then check out these guys' ethical coffee that they bring in from Brazil. They've also got a range of meals you can enjoy before or during the gig.
Family friendly
Because the Mars Hill Café is not a pub, there are no poker machines or any other things preventing people of any age from experiencing The Orphanage Sessions.
